Abstract

665,592. Making electric components. AIRCRAFT -MARINE PRODUCTS, Inc. Dec. 15, 1949 [Dec. 16, 1948], No. 32215/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Shearing; jointing by stamping.-A reciprocating ram press for applying an electric terminal or connector to a piece of wire comprises a pivot ed feed-lever movable in one direction by the movements of the ram and in the other direction by a return spring, and a workengaging feed-finger actuated by the lever so as to feed the work when moved in one direction and to carry out its return movement independently of the work. The invention is described in connection with a machine for applying a string of terminal blanks to the ends of a number of wires. Pivotally-mounted in the upper part of the main casting 26 is a lever one end 34, Fig. 1, of which is adapted to be raised against the action of return-springs 56 by a compressed air cylinder 38. The other end 40 of the lever together with a link 44 forms a toggle connection to a ram 46 mounted between guides 48, 50 and carrying shearing and crimping tools. Mounted on the lower part of the casting is a table 62 adjustable in height by a screw 68, Fig. 4, carrying a nut 74 with two sloping surfaces 76, 77 bearing against the surfaces of triangular members 70, 71 secured to the table. A string 120 of terminal blanks is fed from a reel 122, over a resilient guide 130 and along the table 62 between adjustable guides 132, 134 to beneath the ram by a reciprocating feed-finger 112. Pivotally mounted between brackets 78 is a feed-lever 80, Fig. 3, to the upper end of which is pivoted a feed adjustment lever 94 pivoted at 102 to the upper end of the feedfinger 112. Ears 98 extend from lever 94 to embrace the lower end of the lever 80 which is oscillated against a spring 104 at each stroke of the ram by a push-rod 116 co-operating with a cam surface 118 on the ram. A spring 114 keeps the lower end of the finger 112 pressed on to the table 62. The length of the feeding stroke of the finger is adjustable firstly by altering the point at which the lever 80 is pivoted to the brackets 78, by moving the pivotpin 82 to other holes in the brackets and lever and secondly by turning a screw 108 to vary the distance between the lower ends of the levers 80 and 94. During the backward stroke of the finger, the chain is held by a block 144 with a lifting-handle 154. Secured to the ram 46 is a shear blade 156, a spacing block 158 and a crimping punch 160, whilst secured to the table 62 is a shear-plate 166, spacer blocks, a crimping anvil 172, a gurad plate 188 and a stripper plate 182. The blade 156 may co-operate with the plate 166 to shear the end terminal blank from the chain or an additional shear-plate 170 may be secured to the table assembly so that the blade 156 co-operates with each to sever a transverse strip from the chain, the waste being discharged through the opening 210. In operation, a U-shaped end of the terminal blank is fed to beneath the crimping tool and over an upstanding portion 216 of the anvil 172, the operator inserts the end of the wire through the opening 214 in the guard-plate and operates a trigger to supply compressed air to the actuating cylinder 38. On the descent of the ram, the terminal is crimped on to the wire, as shown in Fig. 8. Another cam surface on the ram may actuate a counting mechanism. Specifications 650,096 and 665,593 are referred to.
