Abstract
Dense bodies of refractory oxides, e.g. beryllia, alumina, zirconia and thoria, are produced by sintering shaped masses of the oxides while enveloped in a non-reacting gas containing free carbon. The body may be shaped by slip casting or cold pressing, and the shaped mass may be pressed during the heat treatment. The presence of free carbon during the sintering is obtained by heating the body in, say, a graphite tube furnace, or by heating in the absence of massive graphite, and in the presence of an atmosphere of inert or non-reactive gas, e.g. argon or nitrogen containing a carbon suspension or a gas decomposable to release carbon. The process is described in detail in connection with beryllia, which is ball-milled. treated with dilute hydrochloric acid for the removal of iron, made into a slip, and cast into a plaster of Paris mould; the air-dried castings are usually prefired at 1000 DEG C., and sintered at 1500-1800 DEG C. for 10-30 minutes in an inert or reducing gas in a graphite tube furnace. (Reference is also made to sintering in a beryllia tube in the presence of hydrogen and carbon dioxide, reacting to produce carbon monoxide). Alternatively, beryllia powder is pressed at 3100 per sq. inch in a graphite crucible heated up to 1600 DEG C. in a graphite tube furnace swept by argon, the pressure being maintained. For alumina, a sintering temperature of 1700 DEG C. for 3 minutes is mentioned, and for zirconia and thoria, 1800 DEG C. for 10 minutes.
