Abstract

665,123. Toggle mechanism. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Jan. 27, 1950 [Jan. 28, 1949], No. 2481/49. Class 80 (iii). [Also in Group XXIX] A transmission mechanism between linearly - moving, coaxial members has provision for varying the ratio of movement of the driving member to that of the driven member. The mechanism is shown applied to valve apparatus for a liquid fuel motor to vary the relative amounts of movement of a driving valve 13 which controls a fuel outlet 54, and a driven valve 14 controlling an oxidant outlet 55, the valve 13 being actuated by a control 11. The valves 13, 14 are provided with extensions 24, 25 whose ends are countersunk to receive balls 26, 27 respectively. The balls are urged together by a spring 38 (Fig. 3) acting on the valve 14, and are spaced by rollers 28, 29 which also contact cam surfaces 36, 37 provided by grooves in a pair of pivotally mounted jaws 39, 40. The inclination of the surfaces 36, 37 is varied to alter the transmission ratio by an axially movable member 41 having inclined surfaces 42, 43 and connected to control rods 48, 49. The member 41 is located by springs 56, 57 and adjusting nuts 50, 51 on the control rods, adjustable members 58, 59 compensating any variations in the strength of the springs. Movement of the members 13 and 41 may be effected by fluid means dependent on motor conditions, velocity, altitude &c. The cam surfaces 36, 37 may be of other than rectilinear form. In a modification, the balls 26, 27 and rollers 28, 29 are replaced by a pair of ball bearings contacting the surfaces 36, 37 and carried -by pairs of links pivoted to the driving and driven members.
