Abstract

664,817. Forming laps and slivers of glass fibres. SOC. ANON. VETRERIA ITALIANA BALZARETTI MODIGLIANI. Dec. 31, 1947 [March 20, 1941], No. 35167/47. Classes 120(i), 120(ii) and 120(iii) A lap of glass fibres, capable of being split into slivers. suitable for twisting and doubling, is formed from a band of glass fibres constituted by one or more mats wherein the fibres are in a plurality of layers, the fibres in each layer being. substantially parallel to one another and arranged at a small angle with respect to fibres in the next layer or layers; the band is subjected to a frictional pull in a direction transverse to the mean direction of the fibres in the band to draw it out in the direction of the pull, the manner of application of the frictional pull being such as to enable the fibres in any layer of the band to swing with respect to those in other layers so that the angle between the fibres in one layer and the next increases as the band is drawn out, and the band is drawn out until the angle between the fibres in adjacent layers of the resultant lap has increased from the initial small angle to about 130 degrees. As shown, the band 1 is progressively drawn out and .narrowed by passing through nip rollers 19, 20, 21 and over a succession of friction belts 2, 3 operating at progressively increasing speeds. Additional nip roller assemblies may be provided as at 12, Fig. 1. In each such roller assembly the web is pressed by a roller 12, Fig. 4, carried on a pivoted arm 13, against rollers 10, 11 which are rotated by a endless band 14 driven by a roller 15. After drawing until the fibre layers cross at about 180 degrees the lap is passed through a bath 4 containing a binder, between squeezing rollers 5, 6,. through a drying chamber 7, and beneath rotary cutters 8, revolving on a roller 9, which divide the web longitudinally into narrow ribbons or slivers 16.
