Abstract
664,813. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 23, 1948 [Aug. 29, 1947], No. 23920/47. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (i). In apparatus of the type embodying an electron discharge tube wherein an electron beam is directed to a target through a substantially uniform axial magnetic focusing field extending along substantially the whole path of the beam and wherein the electrons, as they approach the target, pass through an electric field which decelerates them so that they impinge on the target with substantially zero velocity, the decelerating electric field also producing a radial electric field which leads to spiral distortion, means are provided for producing a radial magnetic field in the region of the decelerating electric field so as to substantially eliminate spiral distortion. To produce the radial magnetic field a short auxiliary coil for producing a magnetic field opposed to the focusing field may be provided in the neighbourhood of the target, Fig. 1 (not shown). In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the focusing coil is formed in two axially spaced parts. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the focusing coil extends beyond the end of the tube and the target is disposed in a suitably divergent part of the focusing field of the coil.
