Abstract

663,898. Sparking preventing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd., and WALKER, A. H. B. May 2, 1950. [May 31, 1949] No. 14538/49. Class 38 (v). Arcing at a switch 5 controlling an inductivecircuit 1 is suppressed by means of a rectifier 8 subjected to a reverse biassing voltage and connected so that surge energy due to the breaking of the circuit is fed through the rectifier to the biassing source and is absorbed thereby whenever the surge voltage exceeds a predetermined value. In Fig. 1, the source 6, 7 supplying the circuit 1 is also the biassing source. On opening the switch 5, a voltage is induced in the winding or tapped portion 2, 3, which, when it exceeds the supply voltage, sends current through the rectifier 8 and source 6, 7. In Fig. 4, a separate biassing source 10 is used and connected in series with the rectifier across part of the inductance 1. In Fig. 5, the biassing source is a condenser 12. This arrangement is for contacts which operate a number of times in quick succession, which causes a voltage to be built up in the condenser. In Fig. 6, which is suitable for A.C. or reversible D.C. the biassing source is a battery 10 and is connected to a full wave rectifier 14 connected to a coil 13 coupled to the inductance 1.
