Abstract

<PICT:0663862/III/1> In an evaporator for dehydrating solids and for removing vapours from other materials not capable of satisfactory convective circulation, the vapour given off is divided into parts; one part is compressed and then passed to a heat-exchanger where it p condenses, while the other part is passed through the opposite side of the heat-exchanger and is thereby superheated; this superheated vapour is then passed directly through the material in the evaporator. The vapour-outlet 3 of drying chamber 1 divides into two parallel branches 5, 6. Branch 5 leads through compressor 7 to condenser 8; whilst branch 6 communicates through supplementary heater 9 with the other side of the condenser, and thence with chamber 1. In operation, a charge of material is placed in chamber 1 and is initially heated by starting fan 4, and heating the resulting air-flow by means of heater 9. When steam is evolved, part of it is compressed and condensed in condenser 8, whilst the other part is superheated in condenser 8 and then circulated, by fan 4, through the material in chamber 1. The condensate from condenser 8 may be used to preheat the material fed to chamber 1, or to finally dry the material discharged from chamber 1. The power for the fan and compressor is advantageously derived from a gas turbine, the exhaust from which is utilized in heater 9, or in the preheater and/or the afterheater. The drying of grass, and of granular material, solid blocks or sheets, is referred to; and the apparatus may be used for subliming solids.
