Abstract

A dicalcium phosphate containing fertilizer is prepared by attacking crude phosphate with sulphuric acid to produce dicalcium phosphate, followed by nitric acid to produce monocalcium phosphate, adding dry ammonium sulphate and bringing the resultant mass into contact with gaseous ammonia until the pH is from 4-7. The resultant dry product contains in addition to dicalcium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, ammonium sulphate-nitrate and gypsum.ALSO:A mixed fertilizer comprising chiefly dicalcium and diammonium phosphates, ammonium nitrate and gypsum is formed by the treatment of crude phosphate first with sulphuric acid to produce dicalcium phosphate, then with nitric acid to produce mono-calcium phosphate, subsequently with dry ammonium sulphate and finally with gaseous ammonia until a pH of 4-7 is reached, the citrate solubility being thus retained. Superphosphate may be mixed with the acid decomposition mass before the ammonium sulphate treatment; alternatively the latter may be mixed with the nitric acid. The compound fertilizer may contain 12-16 per cent, P2O5 and 7-12 per cent N but preferably the phosphorus pentoxide-nitrogen ratio is unity.
