Abstract

661,577. Purifying saccharine liquids. HOLLANDSCHE MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR LICENTIES EN OCTROOIEN N.V. March 8, 1949 [March 8, 1948; Feb. 2, 1949], Nos. 6293/49 and 6294/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 127. [Also in Groups I and V] Sugar-containing liquors are purified by the addition of a small quantity of a diluted gel of corn starch or potato starch treated with lime or soda, or a starch that swells in cold water (see Group V), the micellae of which serve to attract the colloids and other particles in the liquor and cause them to flocculate, so facilitating filtration. The gel is mixed with water to obtain a 2 per cent solution, and is employed in amount of 0.1 to 0.2 per cent of the liquor to be treated. The gel and liquor are supplied in parallel to a mixing tank from which the mixture is fed to a decanter, a filter press, or a centrifuge. The process can be used with raw diffusion juices after preliminary liming, residual refinery liquors which can then be recirculated, with beetroot washing water, or with juices after the first carbonation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a decanter for separating the precipitate (see Group I). This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
