661,283. Joining strips of pile carpet. MACKAY, L. H., and MACKAY, J. Oct. 28, 1949 [Nov. 1, 1948; Feb. 18, 1949], Nos. 28341/48 and 4510/49. Class 142(iv). [Also in Group VIII] In a carpet, formed by securing side-byside similar strips of carpet, the pile height at at least one of the adjacent edges is increased or decreased during weaving so that the pile at a join between two strips of carpet will stand at a uniform height. The strip of carpet is woven with a pileless binding selvedge 12 which laps under the pilebearing selvedge 13 of an adjacent strip. The pile height 16 may be increased to lie at the same height as the pile 14 after lapping and securing the selvedges. In an alternative construction, the pile 17 adjacent the pileless selvedge 12 may be of uniform height and the pile 18 at the pile bearing selvedge may be reduced by an amount equal to the thickness of the pileless selvedge. The pile at the selvedges may be more dense or of thicker yarn to make the join less noticeable.
