Abstract

<PICT:0660999/III/1> <PICT:0660999/III/2> <PICT:0660999/III/3> An apparatus for immersing articles in a liquid or gas, e.g. for cleaning, coating by dipping, rinsing or degreasing, comprises a tank; a pair of spaced horizontal supports having suspended therefrom in U-form a rectangular sieve-like sheet extending into the tank, the sheet being of pliant, non-metallic material, resistant to industrial chemicals and to abrasion, and the unsupported edges of the sheet being closed by end pieces attached thereto; and means for imparting relative and substantially vertical reciprocating movements to the supports. Mounted on the tank 1 are shafts 3 carrying arms 4 and 9, the arms 4 being connected by a link 5 which is driven from a motor 6 through a crank 7 and link 8 to reciprocate the shafts, and the arms 9 carrying non-conducting bars 10 from which are suspended, by hooks 15, rigid strips 12 secured to which are a woven or perforated sheet 11, which may be of a vinyl chloride derivative, and a backing formed as a screen 13 of a vinylidene chloride polymer, end pieces 16, the upper edges of which are rolled on cords or wires 17, being secured to the sheet 11. A ring 18 is carried by the central hook 15 on each side for loading and unloading. Within the tank are conducting bars 20 from which are suspended coils 21 containing balls of anode material. Cathode conductors 25 are suspended from a hinged arm 24 and carry contacts 26. In a modification, a single reciprocated shaft is mounted centrally of the tank and carries oppositely disposed arms from the ends of which are supported the sheet 11 and screen 13.
