Abstract

660,784. Making ball-point pens. EAGLE PENCIL CO. July 15, 1947 [Sept. 5, 1946], No. 18791/47. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group XV] The metal writing-tip T of a ball-point pen is made by the following operations: (1) an accurately-centred shallow hole is made in the end of the tip blank by a centre drill; (2) the blank is axially-drilled to provide the ink channel 12 ; (3) the channel is broached to form grooves 14 ; (4) a relatively large flat-bottomed socket 11, Fig. 1 (not shown), is formed in the tip end by a flat-bottomed drill of short length to provide a space 24 around the ball B; (5) the base of the socket is pressed by a tool to form a part-spherical saucer 17, the spherical radius of which is greater than that of the ball; (6) the centre part of the saucer 17 is pressed either by the ball or by a tool with its end having the same configuration as the ball-to form part-spherical seatings 15a for the-ball; (7) the rim of the socket is rolled in as shown at 18 to hold the ball in place after-its insertion into the socket.
