Abstract

660,742. Coating webs. CLARK, D. M. Aug. 16, 1949, No. 21312/49. Addition to 637,176. Class 140. The apparatus for coating webs described in the parent Specification is characterised in that the coating nozzle 32 is supplied with liquid by gravity through a duct 45 from a reservoir 44 disposed substantially at the same level as the top of the nozzle and provided with an overflow adjustable in elevation to regulate flow from the nozzle. The overflow comprises an outlet tube 49 into which is threaded a tube 50 having lateral inlets 51. By rotating the tube 50 the level of the inlets 51 may be varied. The coating liquid may comprise two components fed separately through tubes 46, 47 respectively and thence through a Y fitting 48 to the reservoir 44. The coated film is upwardly inclined for a short distance after leaving the coating nozzle and is passed over a series of horizontal rolls 35 prior to reaching the position where the excess liquid is removed by the suction device 37, from which position it passes through a drier 38 to a take-up reel 28. The coating nozzle, constructed similarly to that in Specification 637,176, has a single orifice and is provided with a shield 52.
