Nov. 17, 1949 [Jan. 21, 1949], No. 1705/49. Class 106 (ii). An instrument for obtaining an abrasion factor for ascertaining the abrading effect of test pieces of metals having circular peripheries comprises a hardened steel ball and support therefor with means to prevent relative move. ment there between and means to press the support under a predetermined constant load towards the test piece with the ball in non-rotating contact with the periphery of the test piece during relative rotation between the test piece and support. Pivot pins 2 fixed on opposite sides of a carrier 1 mounted on the tool-post of a machine tool serve as abutments for U-shaped limbs 3 at one end of a lever 4 loaded at the other end with a weight 10 and carrying a hardened steel ball 6 held against rotation which is pressed down on a cylindrical test-bar 7, rotated relative thereto and turned round and parallel by a cemented carbide-tipped tool 11. To secure maximum abrasion of the ball 6 by the bar 7, the ball 6 may be traversed along the length of the bar. A screw 5 for mounting the ball 6 may have an axial bore 5b with branches 5c through which oil may be forced to remove abraded swarf. The degree of abrasion may be measured by a dial gauge 12 or by measuring the length of the flat portion of the abrasion on the ball by a simple Brinell type magnifier. The present invention may be combined with the apparatus described in Specification 599,745, or the carrier 1 may be a mounting for a toolholder similar to that described therein.
