Abstract

660,285. Punching. WELEX JET SERVICES, Inc. Nov. 3, 1948, No. 28522/48. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXI] A device 10 for perforating the casings of oil wells comprises a housing 12 in which spacer blocks 16 support cartridges 15, each containing a cavity explosive charge 19, the cartridges. being in the housing with the cavities directed laterally and successive cartridges being mutually perpendicular. Each cavity has a frusto-conical liner 21 and in the rear of each charge is a detonator 22 which is initiated by an element 23 which may be a fuze cord or leads in an electric circuit. The charges may be detonated simultaneously or successively. Each charge is enclosed in a container 18 which may be of metal or any other suitable material and prevents the acess of liquid into the cavity while maintaining a " stand-off " space 28 in front of the cavity to give maximum penetration when the charge is fired. The optimum effect is obtained when the " stand-off " distance is about equal to the maximum diameter of the cavity. The liner may be of metal such as steel or aluminium, brass, copper, glass and thermo-setting plastic materials are also mentioned. Steel liners may have a thickness of 1 to 3 per cent of the charge diameter and aluminium liners 2 to 6 per cent. The maximum cavity diameter, may be from one to two times the thickness of the well casing. In a modification (Fig. 5), the cartridges instead of being inserted in a closed housing are supported by a band 38 of metal or thermo-setting plastic composition. A strap 39 holds the cartridge in position and the band 38 may be twisted at intervals to hold successive cartridges at different orientations. The cartridge itself may be modified to contain a sharge 53 with a cavity at each end having a liner 54. The ends of the cylindrical container 51 are domed and the detonator 57 is placed at the centre of the charge. Detonation may be initiated by dropping a weight along the cable supporting the device in the bore-hole, the weight being arranged to strike a mechanism which will bring about detonation.
