Abstract
659.379. Generation of fuel gas. NEWBY, H. (Badische Anilin- &- Soda-Fabrik). Oct. 13, 1949, No. 26303. [Classes 55(i) and 55(ii)] ] A process for producing fuel gas from finely divided fuel comprises feeding the fuel with an oxygen containing gasifying agent into a chamber where a partial gasification by the heat of combustion occurs, then passing the ungasified fuel and gaseous products tangentially into one end of a cylindrical gasification chamber proper, the fuel being kept in spinning movement by tangential jets of gasifying agent in the second chamber until it is completely gasified, gas being withdrawn axially from the other end of the chamber. In one form, the apparatus consists of a chamber 3 into which powdered coal, which may be mixed with steam, enters through a pipe 1 whilst an air and oxygen mixture enters through pipe 2, combustion and partial gasification occurring in the chamber. The unburnt fuel and gases pass through a funnelshaped extension 4 of the chamber which leads tangentially into a cylindrical chamber 6. Tangential jets 7 spaced along the chamber introduce further gasifying agent and serve to keep the fuel spinning in the chamber. The fuel is thus completely gasified, the fuel gas produced passing out through an axial opening 8. A temperature of 1700‹C. is produced in chamber 6, this causing slagging of the ash, the slag running off through a tapping hole 9. In an example, the gasification of -5 5 metric tons of brown coal produced 12,500 cubic metres of gas of composition 56 per cent CO and H2; 20 per cent CO, and H20 and 24 per cent N2.
