659,070. Coaster hubs. MATTSSON, E. L., and NYLUND, C. A. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35265. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1946. [Class 136 (ii)] In a free-wheel hub for bicycles and like vehicles having disposed within a hub sleeve 7 a combined grip and brake element 12, 13 rotatable around an axle 1 and adapted on rotation of a chain wheel 5 in one direction to grip the inside of the hub sleeve to drive it in a forward direction and on rotation of the chain wheel in the other direction to engage a brake block 19, the combined grip and brake element 12, 13 is movable into frictional engagement with an inwardly extending annular shoulder 15a formed integrally with the hub sleeve 7. The chain wheel 5 is carried on a part 4 rotatably mounted on the axle 1. A threaded driving member 9 is provided on the part 4 and engages corresponding threads 10 in a coupling member 11. A plurality of laminae 13 having projections 14, 14a to engage in grooves 15 in the sleeve 7 are rotatably mounted on a part 11a of the member 11 and are axially adjustable. Laminae 12 are non-rotatably mounted on the part 11a. On forward rotation of the chain wheel 5 in the direction of the arrow P the coupling member 11 together with the laminae moves axially within the hub and causes the laminae to press against the shoulder 15a in the hub sleeve and to rotate with it. This position is maintained by a holder 18 on the end of the member 11. On braking, and end lamina 17 of the grip and brake element presses against the brake block 19 rigidly threaded to the axle 1 and joined to a rigid frame member by a brake bar 21. The end of the coupling member may be slid into a groove 18a on the brake block 19. The lamina 17 may have teeth 17a pointing in the direction of the arrow P which on breaking engage with teeth 19a on the brake block. The engagement of the parts 17, 19 may be facilitated by a leaf spring mounted on the brake block. Specification 21286/04, [Class 136], is referred to.
