Abstract

659,045. Hydraulic mining. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. Nov. 22, 1949, No. 29925. Convention date, Feb. 24. [Class 68 (i)] A method of mining a soluble salt in a subterranean deposit consists of boring through the overlying strata and the salt deposit and passing downward into the bore two preferably concentric tubes, one reaching to the bottom of the bore and the other to the top of the deposit so that a solvent may enter the bottom of the bore and in passing downwards dissolves the salt to enlarge the bore, the brine being removed at the top of the cavity so formed. After enlarging the cavity to a certain extent, the pipes are re-arranged so that the solvent enters the cavity at a point below the upper surface of the deposit, preferably nearly at the bottom of the cavity, rises vertically, and at the top moves radially outwards to descend in dissolving contact with the salt. The brine is withdrawn at the bottom of the cavity by a pipe projecting below the inlet level of the solvent.
