Abstract

659,010. Two-stage hydraulic pumps. INTEGRAL, Ltd., WESTBURY, F., BRAY, P. E., and PACKENHAM, E. W. June 2, 1949, No. 14837. [Class 102(i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A two-stage hydraulic pump comprises two pumping units in tandem, the second stage unit being a radial cylinder pump whose pistons 23 are operated on their working strokes by a cam on eccentric 24 with which they are held in contact only by the liquid supplied by the first stage unit, and an off-loading valve 46, (see Group XXIX), subjected to the final delivery pressure and controlling the latter automatically by relieving the first stage pressure back to the inlet and thereby rendering inoperative one or more pistons of the second stage unit at a predetermined delivery pressure whilst permitting the other pistons to operate at full stroke. When the delivery pressure exceeds a maximum value the valve cuts off communication between the first and second stages and delivery ceases. Liquid enters the pump at 15 and is delivered by a gear pump 12, 13 to an annular duct 21 communicating through inlet valves 22 with the cylinders 27. The liquid is delivered through valves 28 to an annular duct 30 communicating with an outlet 33. In one embodiment the inlet valves of one or more pistons are loaded by stronger springs than the other pistons so that they cannot open when the first stage delivery pressure is reduced. In another embodiment, the valve controls two or more ports leading to different groups of cylinders and the ports are closed successively as the delivery pressure rises.
