Abstract

<PICT:0657528/IV (b)/1> In the synthesis of hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a fluidized iron catalyst, the catalyst is maintained in an active state and resistant to fragmentation by pretreating it at 500-800 DEG F., under atmospheric pressure and in the fluidized state with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the ratio of 2-40 mols. hydrogen to one of carbon monoxide to convert a substantial portion of the iron to iron carbide. The catalyst may be continuously or intermittently withdrawn from the synthesis reactor 1 through line 13, subjected to the carbiding treatment in vessel 16 and returned to the reactor through line 20. Synthesis gas is supplied to reactor 1 through line 2 and the carbiding mixture to vessel 16 through line 15. A portion of the gases leaving reactor 1 and vessel 16 may be recycled through lines 11 and 19.
