Abstract

<PICT:0657300/III/1> A surface is flame sprayed with metals or organic materials by supplying a mixture of a reducing and/or cooling gas and compressed air to a spraying tool, separately supplying a burning gas and oxygen to said tool, controlling the pressures and volumes of each of said gases within predetermined limits, feeding a supply of spray material into said tool, and igniting said gases to produce a flame for entraining and projecting particles of spray material, such particles issuing from the nozzle of the spraying tool in the solid state enveloped in said reducing and/or cooling gas and being melted externally of the nozzle and projected in that condition whilst still enveloped in said reducing and/or cooling gas to the target. Air from a compressor 1 is cleaned at 6, passed to a regulating valve 9 and mixed with a reducing or cooling gas from a tank 11, the mixture being fed through a pipe 17 to a pistol 10. The reducing or cooling gas, which may be carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium, argon, propane or hydrogen, may be heated at 13a and passes through a regulating valve 15 before admixture with the air. Burning gas, such as propane, hydrogen, acetylene, natural or domestic gas from a container 19 and oxygen from a container 25 pass through regulating valves 22, 28 to the pistol. Thermometers 8a, 17a and gauges 12, 16, 23, 29 are provided. Air may also be fed through the pipe 8 to the pistol, some of the air passing to an agitator in a container 34 for powdered spray material which is thus fed through the pipe 35 to the pistol. Metals such as carbon-manganese steel, rubber or plastics such as the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Thiokol" may be sprayed. A nitriding atmosphere may be provided by the use of nitrogen as the cooling gas. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also the use of spray material in rod or wire form. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
