Abstract
656,928. Piezo electric instruments. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 9, 1948, No. 31928. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (b)] A microphone or a compressional wave emitter comprises a compound piezo - electric crystal mounted as a diaphragm so as to be restrained at its edges, and firmly clamped at those parts of its edges corresponding to nodal points or nodal lines, the crystal being arranged as the end wall of an elongated hollow structure, the interior of which is filled with a vibration - absorbing medium. An elongated casing 1 of rectangular cross-section terminates in a flange 4 on which rest an insulating gasket 10, a conducting frame 11, and a compound piezo-electric diaphragm 5. Over the diaphragm is an apertured clamping frame 6 held in position by screws 9 engaging flange 4. Frame 11 may be of silver, and serves to make electrical connection to the underside of the crystal by means of a lead 13 which serves also to keep a central strap 12 away from the central vibrating part of the crystal. Connection to the upper face of the crystal is made through the casing 1 and frame 6. The casing 1 is filled with absorbent material such as glass wool to prevent setting up standing waves. When used as a microphone, the base may accommodate a small valve amplifier. The device may be mounted in the throat of a horn to increase its directivity. The compound crystal may comprise two X-cut quartz plates bonded together with their Y-axes at right angles, or two Rochelle salt crystals arranged for twisting, two opposite corners only being firmly held by hard inserts in a soft rubber gasket.
