Abstract

A rust-inhibiting composition comprises a hydrocarbon oil, a partial ester derived from a polyhydroxy alcohol containing not more than 20 carbon atoms and an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 6-30 carbon atoms, and a diamine in which the amino groups are attached to a hydrocarbon radical containing 2-10 carbon atoms. Polyhydroxy alcohols specified are ethylene and diethylene glycols, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycols, glycerol, diglycerol, pentaglycerol and polyglycerols, sorbitan, sorbitol, inositol, pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, tetramethylolcyclopentanol, tetramethylolcyclohexanol and anhydro - ennea - heptitol. Carboxylic acids referred to are caproic, caprylic, lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, ricinoleic, eleomargaric, erucic, behenic, arachidic, lignoceric, and naphthenic acids, and acids derived from the oxidation of petroleum products or from the oxidation of oxygen-containing products prepared by the "Oxo" process. Naturally-occurring products such as tall oil, castor oil, soybean oil, linseed oil, olive oil, tung oil, rapeseed oil and menhaden oil, or acids derived therefrom such as coconut fatty acids, may also be used for the esterification. Diamines mentioned are ethylene, propylene, tetramethylene, hexamethylene, octamethylene and decamethylene diamines, 1,2-diamino-cyclohexane, 1,3 - diamino - cyclohexane, 1,4 - diamino - cyclohexane, 1, 3 - diamino - 1 - methyl - cyclohexane, 1,1 - dimethyl - 3, 5 - diamino - cyclo-hexane, and phenylene, toluylene and xylylene diamines. From 0.01 to 10 per cent by weight of the partial ester and from 0.001 to 5 per cent by weight of the diamine is preferably used. Examples are given of mineral oil compositions containing pentaerythritol mono-oleate or sorbitan mono-oleate, and propylene diamine; these are compared with compositions containing the partial ester or the diamine alone.
