Abstract

Cellular products are made by mixing polymers or copolymers with "rosin" and optionally a plasticizer, impregnating the mix whilst at a temperature sufficient to render it homogeneous, e.g. 132 DEG to 170 DEG C., with an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, under high pressure, e.g. 4,000 lbs. per square inch, cooling the gas-filled product whilst maintaining the pressure, releasing the pressure, and then expanding the product by reheating it. The term "rosin" means rosin and similar resins obtained by the distillation of wood, or as a residue from the solvent extraction of rosin and chemically similar products. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl formal, polyvinyl acetal, and copolymers of polyvinyl chloride and polyvinylidene chloride. The plasticizer may be a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The mix may contain stabilizers such as lead or cadmium stearate and a small amount of methylated spirits or colouring agents.
