[Class 4] The tail unit of an aeroplane comprises fixed auxiliary surfaces 7 mounted above the tailplanes and elevators 4, 5, and set at a negative angle of incidence, preferably of nine degrees. The rudder 6 is mounted between the surfaces 4, 7, while the dihedral angle of the surfaces 7 is substantially the same as that of the mainplanes 3. In plan form the auxiliary surfaces 7 are swept back, and taper rearwardly to form sharp tips 10.
