Abstract

Carbon black is produced by flowing a plurality of confined hydrocarbon gas streams, of diameter 3/32 -1 inch uniformly spaced at 3.4-8.425 times the stream diameter upwardly through a heated furnace chamber to <PICT:0655799/III/1> heat the hydrocarbon to 1400-2400 DEG F., flowing air upwardly around but out of contact with the streams at not more than 3 feet per second, without turbulence in amount sufficient only to effect partial combustion of the hydrocarbon, thereafter contacting the air with the hydrocarbon streams flowing at not less than 12 times the velocity of the air flow, cooling the effluent combustion gases and collecting the carbon black. Air from blower 30 passes through pipe 32 with control dampers 33 to metal casing 17 and thence through perforations in inclined partitions 18 to refractory walled reaction chamber 1. Natural gas with or without enriching hydrocarbons and/or steam preheated to 500 DEG F. is fed, through manifolds 23 and refractory, e.g. silicon carbide, mullite, or alumina, burner tubes 25 wherein heat reflected from walls of chamber 1 causes partial pyrolysis, to chamber 1 and ignited. The air-gas ratio should be between 3.5 : 1 and 7 : 1 and the gaseous suspension of carbon passes from chamber 1, through throat 11 and conduit 12 with water sprays 12a, to conventional cooling and collecting means. Manifolds 23 are slidably mounted on a flange on horizontal tubular water cooled supports 20 so that they may be withdrawn through closable slots 34 for replacement of burner tubes. Furnace scale falls down inclined partitions 18 into conduit 19. Specification 655,798 is referred to.
