Abstract
655,509. Thermal switches. DEHN, S. G. (Sunbeam Corporation). Aug. 6, 1948, No. 20811. [Class 38(v)] [Also in Group VIII] An adjustable thermostatic control for an electric steam iron (see Group VIII), comprises a pair of contacts 65 66 carried by arms 64, 67 respectively, the arm 64 being connected by a rod 63 or other connecting device with a bimetallic element 61, and provided with a rigid extension 64a connected by a tension spring 79 to a vertically movable member 112. The member 112 comprises an annular plate provided with spaced extensions for engagement with a spiral groove 111 in a sleeve 110. Rotation of a control button 120 secured to the sleeve 110 causes vertical 1 movement of the plate 112, rotational movement of the plate being prevented by a lateral extension 112b thereon engaging in a recess 115 in the inner part of the hollow handle. Variation of the tension applied through the spring 79 and extension 64a to the arm 64 varies the temperature at which the contacts separate. In a modification, Fig. 19 (not shown), the spring 79 is replaced by a link connected to the arm not directly affected by the bimetallic element. In both cases the bimetallic element is disposed in a well in the sole plate of the iron and in intimate engagement with a portion of the surface of the well.
