Abstract

A bactericidal, fungicidal and insecticidal composition comprises a major amount of a water immiscible biocide carrier and a minor amount of a resin or salt thereof prepared by the condensation of formaldehyde, an aromatic amine and dicyandiamide. The amine is of formula <FORM:0655427/VI/1> where R represents hydrogen, alkyl or aryl; X1 and X2 repesent hydrogen, alkyl, amyl, halogen, halo-alkyl, alkoxy, aryl oxy or nitro; and where X2 may form a condensed ring system e.g. quinoline or naphthalene. Such resins may be prepared according to Specification 572,829, [Group VIII]. Specified amines are aniline, -napthylamine, o- and mtoluidines, xylidines, o- and manisidines, 2-and 3- phenoxyanilines, 2- and 3- aminodiphenyls, 2- and 3- chloroanilines, 5-chloro m-toluidine, 2, 5- dichloro aniline, 2- and 3- nitro anilines, N-ethyl-5-nitro m-toluidine, N-methyl 4 nitro aniline, diphenylamine, 2-nitro diphenylamine and 2- chloro diphenylamine. The resin salts may be of organic or inorganic acids e.g. acetic, caproic, caprylic, capric, stearic, naphthenic, sulphonated castor oil, naphthalene sulphonic acid, p-tertiary amyl benzoic acid, hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric. Specified carriers are aliphatic hydrocarbons e.g. gasoline, kerosene, mineral oil, petrolatum and trichlorethylene; aliphatic ethers e.g. b , b 1 dichloroethyl ether and butyl vinyl ether; aliphatic acids having not less than seven carbon atoms in the molecule e.g. caprylic, capric, lauric, linoleic, stearic and oleic; aromatic solvents e.g. benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene and nitrobenzene; animal fats, oils, greases and waxes e.g. fish oils, lard, lanolin and beeswax; vegetable oils, fats and waxes e.g. castor, peanut, linseed, olive, pine and cottonseed oils, carnauba wax and ceresin; terpenes e.g. turpentine and camphor oil; natural resins; flours such as walnut shell, wheat, redwood, soya bean and cottonseed; inorganic materials such as calcium phosphate, zinc stearate, Bancroft's clay, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, sulphur, lime, pyrophyllite, talc and bentonite. The compositions may be in the form of emulsions, sprays, dusts or solutions with or without wetting agents such as alkali metal or amino salts of oleic acid and sulphonated alcohols, acyl taurides, alkyl naphthalene sulphonates and others. The compositions may be used in conjunction with other insecticides such as arsenates, fluosilicates, phenothiazines, n-dodecyl thiocyanates, butyl carrbitol thiocyanate, nicotine, anabasine, nornicotine, rotenone, hellebore, pyrethrum, isobutyl undecylenamide, amino methyl sulphides; and with bactericides and fungicides e.g. sulphur, lime sulphur, chlorinated phenols, copper acyl acetonates and other copper salts of organic compounds, basic copper carbonate, Bordeaux mixture, Burgundy mixture, quaternary ammonium halides, and ferric dimethyl dithiocarbamate. Adhesives such as glue, rosin and polyvinyl butyl ether may also be present. The compositions may be added to a polish for leather and to paint. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also ointments consisting of a mixture of (a) anilineformaldehyde-dicyanamide resin, petrolatum and lanolin and (b) the acetate of aniline formaldehyde dicyanamide resin, salicylic acid, petrolatum and lanolin. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
