[Class 83 (iii)] A lathe or like machine tool with guideways for a saddle and tailstock, arranged at different levels to avoid interference between their respective movements, is characterised in that the guideway for the tailstock is arranged to the rear of the vertical plane through the spindle axis of the machine, and at an angle to the horizontal guideway for the saddle less than a right angle and preferably at about 60 degrees. The saddle 4 is of box form, Fig. 3, sliding on oil-bath guideways 2, 3, formed in the top closed surface of the bed 1 and normally carries a compound and rotatably adjustable tool-rest 4d, 4e. Saddle feed is effected from screwed spindles 11, 12, one of which is used for screw-cutting. Separate guideways 6, 7 inclined to the saddle guideways are provided for a tailstock 5. The tailstock is automatically traversed by a screwed spindle 16 and has a vertical turret 17 which in addition to the adjustable centre 18 may carry cutting tools. The headstock 19 is vertically adjustable on ways 21 forming part of the closed back 8 of the machine, The machine may be adapted for planing or shaping operations by replacing the compound tool-rest by a work-table 22 supported on the saddle 4 and reciprocated from an independent electric motor 23a with a reversing clutch 33. The tailstock is retracted to enable the member 24 with a compound tool-head 25 to be carried on the guideways 6, 7. Stops 37 are provided to reverse the table 22 and to operate a ratchet feed mechanism 41-44 for the transverse movement of the tool-head.
