Abstract

655,062. Treating wood. HUDSON, M. S. Jan. 26, 1948, No. 2257. Convention date, March 19, 1940. [Class 140] [Also in Group XIII] In a method of drying and impregnating wood or wood products by distilling off the water in a chamber by an atmosphere of vapours of higher boiling point than water, the drying medium is the vapour-phase of an aliphatic, naphthenic or aromatic compound inert to the wood and having a melting-point not greater than 60‹ C., the vapour phase being maintained at a temperature equal to the boiling-point of its liquid phase at the pressure in the chamber and the distilled water vapour being continuously drawn off. The wood is supported on a truck 32 in a chamber 10 having hinged ends 11, 12 and a receptacle 13 for the liquid treating medium M. An outlet 14 connected to a vapour collecting header 20 leads to condensers 15, 16 which in turn lead to a separator 18, the pipe 19 being a return pipe for the treating medium and the water going to waste at 19<SP>1</SP>. The treating liquid M which may be a coal-tar or petroleum fraction or creosote &c. is heated to its boiling point by coils 21 immersed in the liquid. Water is distilled from the wood and passes with the vapours into the condensers and separator, the condensed vapours returning to the chamber to be used again. A pipe 17 may be connected to a vacuum producing means to remove the vapours from the chamber when drying is complete and recover distillate which may remain in the wood. The wood is impregnated by filling the chamber 10 with preservative, which may be the same as the drying medium, and impressing a pressure on the liquid.
