Abstract

654,931. Photographic outline images especially for photomechanical purposes; photographic materials. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. Aug. 20, 1946, No. 24779. [Class 98 (ii)] Outline images e are produced photographically by exposing a two-layer silver halide emulsion material, the upper layer u being separable, developing to produce negative images a, b, in the two layers u, l, forming a positive image of said negative image in at least the lower layer l, followed by removing the upper layer either before or after fixing the positive images. The positive image d in the lower layer may be formed either simultaneously with development of the negative images a, b by diffusion development, as described in Specifications 614,155, 654,630, [Group IV (b)], and 654,631, or by subsequently re-exposing the developed negative with diffuse light to yield on developing registered positive images c, d in both layers. The lower layer of the two-layer material used when diffusion development is employed contains development nucleii of the kind employed in physical development processes around which the unexposed silver halide which differs from the upper layer crystallizes as colloidal silver. The upper layer may include sodium bisulphite so as to be less hardened than the lower layer when this is treated with formaldehyde, and hence remains soluble in warm water, or the upper and lower layers may be separated by a stripping layer. Screened outline images may be produced by exposing beneath a screen the upper layer only of the material either before or after the imagewise exposure by a suitable choice of exposure time; or by sensitizing the upper layer only to green light and printing the screen with green light; and treating the combined negative images as before so that on removing the upper layer u by dissolving it in warm water or stripping it a screened contour image e, g, Fig. 6, remains in the hardened lower layer.
