Abstract

654,868. Mineral mining machines HAARMANN, A. Dec. 10, 1948, No. 32014. [Class 68 (i)] A mineral mining machine is maintained against a face by a resilient force exerted on the machine in a direction substantially at right angles to that of the movement of the machine during the cutting operation. The machine comprises a plurality of scoops 6 secured at irregular intervals to a cable which is given a reciprocatory movement so that the side of the scoop adjacent and parallel to the face and provided on the leading edge with a plurality of spaced teeth 20 cuts grooves in the face during the advance of the scoop whilst on the return movement a closely set group of teeth 38 on the trailing edge removes the mineral that is left outstanding between the grooves cut during the forward stroke. The dislodged coal is carried forward into the path of the scoop ahead which in turn carries it further forward, the pivoted plates 60 forming the rear of the scoops riding over the dislodged coal on the return stroke. The scoops are urged against the face by a guide rail 12 formed of loosely interconnected rails of a U-channel with a half cylindrical rolled section 14 welded to the lower flange of the channel to facilitate sliding. The front and rear cutting edges of the scoop may be of a horizontal V-shape and are asymmetrical so that a downward force is exerted on the cutting edge whilst the under surface approximates to a flat arc 41 in the longitudinal direction. The scoops can be formed of articulated sections and weight is concentrated low in the side walls. At the ends of each rail is a pneumatic jack 15 the cylinder of which bears against the rail and the piston rod 17 against a roof support 18 so that when compressed air is admitted to the cylinder a resilient force is exerted on the guide rail. A check lever mounted on the cylinder 15 and acting on an abutment on the piston rod limits the resilient movement of the jack but this lever can be disengaged and the jack used to advance the guide rail on which it acts so that the scoops are moved up to the new workmg face. The resilient force exerted by the ram can be transformed into a rigid thrust by a hand operated pawl engaging teeth on the piston rod.
