654,743. Treadle propelled cycles. RUNDLE, L. A. Oct. 5, 1948, No. 25880. [Class 136 (ii)] A bicycle comprises a framework supporting a back panel 19, long handle-bars 2 joined by a strut 3, a foot-drive board 5 reciprocable in a horizontal plane, driving rods 8, 10 having toothed racks 11, 12 along their rearward parts engaging ratchet wheels 13, 23 fixed to the hub 33 of the rear wheel, the rack 11 engaging the uppermost periphery of the ratchet wheel 13 and the rack 12 bearing upwardly against the lowermost periphery of the ratchet wheel 23. A diagonal strut 32 joins the two racks 11, 12. The foot-board 5 is returned to its normal position after each stroke by a spring 6 or a pneumatic cylinder. Supporting struts 29, 29a are fitted to the chassis 4 of the vehicle. A weatherproof casing may be attached to the bicycle in wet weather.
