Abstract

654,717. Photo-mechanical printing processes. ARCHER, T. I. May 13, 1949, No. 12842. Convention date, June 3, 1948. [Class 98 (ii)] In the preparation of a printing-plate for photo-lithography, a plate of mirror-polished stainless steel is cleaned with benzole and rubbed with cotton wool soaked in water and whitening. After washing the plate with running water, it is subjected to electrolysis in a bath containing 10 per cent phosphoric acid; in this bath, the plate forms the cathode, another stainless steel plate the anode and a current of 10 to 20 amps. per square foot is passed for five minutes. The plate is again washed and then copperplated in a bath containing 2.1 lbs. copper sulphate, 3 lbs. of sulphuric acid and 1 gallon of water through which a current of 5-10 amps. per square foot is passed for 5 or more minutes. After removal from this bath, the plate is immersed in a solution of 2 ozs. acetic acid, 4 ozs. salt, and 20 ozs. water. Thereafter, the plate is rubbed with cotton wool soaked in water and then coated with a solution comprizing 8 ozs. fish glue, 32 ozs. water and 4 ozs. of a 20 per cent solution of ammonium bichromate, by whirling. The plate is then exposed to sunlight or arc lamps through a negative contacting the light-sensitive coating. After exposure, the plate is immersed in a solution comprising 20 ozs. of water and # oz. of methyl violet and, after removal therefrom, the unexposed coating on the plate is washed away with water. The plate is then dried and heated until the violet image turns to brown. By immersing the plate in an iron perchloride bath, the copper plating on the unexposed parts of the plate is removed and the plate is then washed and dried prior to immersion in a hot 20 per cent caustic soda solution and rubbing with felt to remove the exposed fish glue coating. Thereafter, the plate is washed, dried and the copper image is inked ready for printing. Specification 641,646 is referred to.
