Abstract

653,734. Drawing apparatus for textile spinning machines. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. June 9, 1947, Nos. 15147/47, and 14220/48. [Class 120(ii)] A spinning frame for jute or similar long staple fibres spun directly from slivers has a retaining nip and a drawing nip so situated that the straight line joining them is more horizontal than vertical and is so short that if the sliver were to follow it excessive breakage of fibres would occur. To obtain the required length of sliver path, fibre control means which deflect the sliver out of a straight line path are provided. Preferably, the vertical distance between the retaining and drawing nips is no greater than half the length of the sliver path. The improvements make it possible to reduce the height of the machine. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a sliver S is drawn between rotating rollers 34, 35 and drawing rollers 36, 37 and is deflected to increase its path to a length appropriate to the length of the fibres by a slip-draft roller 38, which is driven slightly faster than the retaining rollers 34, 35. A pressing roller 39, lightly weighted by its supporting arm 54, helps to control the fibres. Retaining roller 35 is weighted by a spring 40 through a bell crank-lever 42 and drawing roller 37 is weighted by a load 44 through levers 46, 48. The sliver S is fed from a can, but the drawing head may be modified slightly to permit feeding from sliver rolls in a creel above the retaining rollers. In a further modification, Fig. 3, two pairs of slip draft rollers 66, 67 and 70, 71 are employed and the retaining rollers 34, 35 are located lower than the drawing rollers 36, 37 so as to facilitate feeding from cans. In an additional modification, in which sliver is fed preferably from rolls, the sliver may enter the drawing head from the front of the machine. Specifications 407,690, 407,707, 509,493, 516,466 and 653,735 are referred to.
