Abstract

A complex chromium compound is manufactured by treating the azo dyestuff 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid -->1-naphthol-5-sulphonic acid at a raised temperature with an amount of a salt of trivalent chromium sufficient to produce a chromium compound containing in the dyestuff molecule about one atom of chromium in complex union. Suitable chromium salts are the fluoride, sulphates, acetate and formate, and the treatment therewith may be carried out under atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, advantageously in an acid medium. The product is suitable for dyeing materials of animal character (e.g. casein and gelatine), and especially for dyeing or printing animal textile fibres (e.g. wool or silk) and leather, also fibres possessing similar dyeing properties (e.g. artificial staple fibres of casein, or animalized cellulose artificial silk), and artificial fibres of superpolyamides or superpolyurethanes, yielding blue to navy-blue tints. Examples describe the preparation of the chromium compound and the dyeing of wool therewith. Specification 365,113 and French Specification 850,530 are referred to.
