Abstract

653,389. Knitting. BEVINS, Ltd., F. W. & H. J., BEVINS, F. W., and BEVINS, H. J. May 23,1947, No. 13862. [Class 74 (ii)] [Also in Group VII] A collar having a neck-band and a turn-down portion, both of knitted fabric, has a welted structure at the juncture between them; and has, in the turn-down portion, the loops at the inner and outer faces drawn in opposite directions and the fabric at the inner face denser than the fabric at the outer face. In making the collar on a. rib machine, all the needles of that bed forming the inner face of the turn-down part 2b knit at every course 4, 5, &c., whilst in the other bed odd and even needles knit in alternate courses, holding their loops in the intervening courses. Thus, the outer face of the part 2b resembles the 1 X 1 rib of the shirt and the inner face is denser. At the fold, the needles knitting the inner face hold their loops for a few courses whilst the needles of the other bed knit at every course to produce a roll welt structure 7, which may be repeated at 8, after one or more courses on all needles: instead, there may be formed a French or tubular welt or a racked welt. The raw edges of the collar are turned inwards and secured by a seam covering stitch. The seam 3 is reinforced by tape 11 across the back and the top of the Raglan sleeves.
