[Class 100 (ii)] Rotary offset machines; set-off, preventing.-A device for cleaning a moving forme, offset, or impression surface in a printing machine comprises a felt, molleton, &c. wick which both moistens with an ink solvent, and moves into and out of contact with the surface, a portion of an absorbent web, e.g. of creped unsized high - wet - strength lightweight kraft paper. Two cleaning devices 30 are shown in Fig. 1 as applied to the offset cylinder 16 and the impression cylinder 17 of a planographic printing machine, the cylinder 17 and the forme cylinder 15 (having an aqueous ink repellent supply 29, 28 and an inking mechanism 26, 25) being geared to the cylinder 16 which is driven by a motor 20 through belts 21 and a pinion 23. The devices 30 comprise fixed end plates 31, 32 spaced by rods 33, 34, Figs. 3 and 7, and supporting spaced rotary discs 38, 39 having peripheral lugs which engage slots in the ends of storage and take-up reels 36, 35 for the paper web 37 ; the discs 38 are driven by hand knobs 43, Figs. 1 and 3, and for reel-changing are retractable after withdrawal of sliding locks 57 from grooves in their spindles; the discs 39 are pressed along their fixed shafts 44 by springs 47 ; leaf spring 49, Fig. 3, engages a ratchet 48 on the upper disc 39, and the lower disc 39 is retarded by an adjustable band brake. The wick 60, Fig. 7, on a T-section metal reinforcement 66, projects from an elongated box-like holder 61 supported by tongues 64, Fig. 3, slidable in slots in the end plates 31, 32; a handle 76, Fig. 1, rotates cam discs 74, Fig. 7, and a disc 92, Fig. 3; the discs 74 advance the wick holder 61, against springs 72, Fig. 3, until the web 37 is pressed against the cylinder 16 or 17 (the discs may pass dead-centre to lock it in this position); the disc 92, through a sheathed cable 93, operates a plunger pump 81, Fig. 1, to supply ink solvent periodically from a container 80, through conduits 82, 83, a check valve 90, Fig. 3, a perforated pipe 86 projecting into the box 61, and a notched-edged plate 88, Fig. 7, to the wick 60. The knobs 43 and handle 76 of the cleaner 30 for the impression cylinder 17, Fig. 1, are extended by belts and a connecting rod respectively. In a modification, Fig. 11, the wick 130 and its holder 131, removable bodily from the device, are normally secured, with the wick against the web, by stud heads 136 engaging a flange 135; manual rotation of cams 167 connected by a bar 165 rotates the whole device about spindles 113 clipped into fixed blocks 150, to bring the web out of contact with the cylinder surface against an adjustable spring loading; one of the cams 167 is connected to the pump-operating cable; the web feeding lever 115 drives the upper web reel through a pawl and ratchet, and the lower web reel is braked by a dished spring washer engaging one of its mounting discs; the discs corresponding to 39 in Fig. 3 are retractable for reelchanging by a plate having a latch which may be hooked to the plate 32.
