Abstract
The tarnishing of non-ferrous metals and alloys such as copper, brass and German silver, caused by contact with a calcium sequestering phosphate such as tetrasodium pyrophosphate or hexasodium tetraphosphate, is inhibited by dissolving in the solution at least 0.001 per cent and at the most 5 per cent by weight on the said phosphate of a compound having a nucleus <FORM:0652339/I/1> where X is tetravalent carbon or trivalent nitrogen, the dotted lines indicating that the two adjacent carbon atoms, and/or the nitrogen atom and X, may be attached by double bonds. Photographic developers are excluded from such solutions. Compounds specified as having the above nucleus are ethylene thiourea, benzotriazole, 2-methyl imidazole, 4-methyl imidazole, benzimidazole, 5-methyl benzimidazole, 2-amino benzimidazole, histidine, adenine, guanine, xanthine, creatinine, allantoin and dimethyl hydantoin. Inorganic compounds such as sodium chloride or sulphate, and synthetic detergents may be added. U.S.A. Specifications 1,956,515, 2,031,827 and 2,395,971 are referred to.
