Abstract

1 - Chloro-4-nitroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid is obtained from the 1-amino body by a Sandmeyer reaction using copper chloride.ALSO:Dyes are made by acylating a 4-aminoanthraquinone - 2,1(N) : 11,21(N) - napthacridone which is free from nitro or further amino groups. Halogen atoms or alkyl or alkoxy groups may be present. Acylating agents specified are benzoic acid or p-bromo-, p-iodo-, or p-chloro-benzoic acids or their derivatives. The products dye or print wool, silk, cotton, linen, artificial silk, and regenerated cellulose grey shades, and may be converted to their leuco-sulphuric esters. In an example, 4 - aminoanthraquinone - 2,1(N) : 11,21(N) - naphthacridone is heated with p-chlorobenzoyl chloride in nitrobenzene, or alternatively with p-bromobenzoyl chloride or p-methoxybenzoyl chloride. 4 - Nitroanthraquinone - 2 : 1(N) : 11,21(N)-naphthacridone is obtained by ringclosure of 1 - (21 - naphthylamino) - 4 - nitroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid, obtained from b -naphthylamine and 1 - chloro - 4 - nitroanthraquinone - 2 - carboxylic acid (see Group IV (b)). It may be reduced to the 4-amino body.
