Abstract

651,893. Balancing of engines. MANLEY, G. E. Feb. 20, 1948, No. 4994. [Class 122(iii)] In an engine of the type in which the piston or each piston moves with a simple harmonic motion and is connected to a crank by a crosshead, rotary balancing masses are arranged so that the centrifugal forces associated with them act in opposition to the momentum of the reciprocating parts when the latter are at either end of their movement, and act in mutual opposition when the reciprocating parts are in the mid position of their movement. The pistons 11 of an opposed two-cylinder engine drive, through a slotted crosshead 12, a crankpin 14 which connects crank cheeks 15 situated on either side of the crosshead 12 and fitted with balance weights 16 whose combined centrifugal force is equal to one half of the momentum exerted by the reciprocating assembly when at the ends of its stroke. Each crank cheek 15 is formed with a main shaft section 17 carrying thereon, at equal distances from the axis of reciprocation, pinions 18 each associated with a group of oppositely disposed and equal pinions 19 carrying equal and similarly-phased balance weights 191 whose combined centrifugal force is also equal to one half of the momentum exerted by the reciprocating assembly when at the ends of its stroke. The weights 191 and 16 are phased so that their centrifugal forces act in the same direction and in opposition to the momentum of the reciprocating assembly when the latter is at either end of its stroke, Fig. 2; and in opposite directions when the assembly is at mid-stroke, Fig. 1. Any number of balancing weights 191 may be used.
