Abstract

651,725. Fluid-pressure presses. HOPE, T. Oct. 29, 1947, No. 28846. [Class 122(iii)] '[Also in Group XV] In a press for use in bookbinding &c. there is provided a frame carrying at its top, upstanding posts d, to the upper and lower ends of which are secured respectively a stationary thrust member e and a plate f; a movable platen i slides on the posts d between the upper and lower members e, f under the influence of a ram h passing through the lower plate f into a pneumatic cylinder g suspended from the plate f, and a supply of compressed air to the cylinder g is controlled by a valve which permits alternatively the charging and exhausting of the cylinder g for the lifting and lowering of the platen i. The cylinder g is connected to a compressed air receiver j which may be connected to compressed air mains or directly to a compressor and from which by way of a pipe l, pressure gauge o, the valve and a pipe k, air is supplied to the cylinder g; air is ex- 'hausted by way of the pipe k, the valve and a pipe m. Shock absorbers may be provided e.g: about the posts d to receive the platen i at the end of its down stroke. The pipe m may be passed over the plate f and provided with a spring opened valve such that on lowering the platen i it closes the valve and traps air in the cylinder g to form a cushion. A modified rotary valve is described in the Provisional Specification.
