Abstract
Fibrous materials are printed with printing compositions containing dyestuffs incorporated with water insoluble, especially water-repellent, dyestuff carriers, characterized by the fact that the dyestuff carrier consists of a linseed oil varnish or varnish and printing oil, and that all the necessary modification of the dyestuff carrier is produced by treating the printed material with moist steam for a period to render the dyestuff carrier at least in part water-penetrable whereby penetration of the dyestuffs to the fibres is effected. Any unmodified dyestuff carrier may subsequently be removed with an organic solvent, e.g. trichlorethylene. The material may be wetted with water before or during the steaming process, and a wetting agent may be added to the water. In order to fix the dyestuff on the fibres, the printed fabric may be moistened with a solution containing an acid or acid salt before steaming, e.g. lactic, tartaric, oxalic or formic acid may be used. A neutral substance which will release acid under the action of moist steam may be added to the printing composition, e.g. triacetine. Acid substances may be included in the moist steam in order to fix the dyestuff on the fibres, e.g. formic acid. The modification of the dyestuff carrier may be expedited by adding to the printing paste substances which are in themselves soluble in water and act as a connection between the water-repellent dyestuff carrier and the moist steam, e.g. monohydric and polyhydric alcohols. In example (1) a fabric is printed with Indanthren Brilliant Blue GCD Fine PV, "Rongalite C" (Registered Trade Mark), potash, varnish, aluminium hydroxide and glycerine, is steamed with moist steam and then reoxidized in the usual way, washed, soaped, rinsed and tentered. A number of other examples are given illustrating the use of various dyes such as vat dyes, acid dyes, wool dyes, acetate dyes, &c. with the dyestuff carriers.
