Abstract

650,770. Automatic voltage control systems. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Jan. 29, 1947, No. 2796. Convention date, Feb. 7, 1946. [Class 38 (iv)] In a control system for a turbo-alternator supplying a mainly ohmic load, output voltage is automatically varied in dependence on and in the same sense as frequency to obtain a speed-torque characteristic suited to the turbine. For stable operation of a turbo-alternator 2, Fig. 2, supplying a mainly resistive load 1 an inductance 6 in series with the operating coil of an automatic voltage regulator 4 acting on the field of an exciter 3 causes the load voltage to rise with increase of frequency corresponding to an increase of speed and vice versa, the consequent change in load opposing the change in speed. In Fig. 3 this effect is produced only while speed is changing, by two opposed D.C. coils 9 and 10 operating on a voltage regulator 8. A resonant circuit 13, 14 produces the voltage change with change of frequency and a series condenser eliminates the effect of coil 10 under static conditions. Coil 10 may directly influence the alternator field or control a transformer associated with the alternator output.
