Abstract

650,333. Tube: joints. ROBERTSHAWFULTON CONTROLS CO. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 5753. Convention date, April 25, 1947. [Class 99(i)] [Also in Group XXII] Means for sealing the end of a tube, that is to be worked by fluid supply under pressure to its interior, comprise a body member mounting a nose piece; for insertion into the tube, there being a chamber between the body and nose with a circumferential gap in 'the outer wall, and a flexible diaphragms in the chamber projecting through the gap into contact with the tube under fluid pressure supplied'to the chamber. The invention is described with reference to corrugating a tube to form a bellows as described in Specification 508,630 [Group XXII]. The tube is held between two part dies 15 and against an end plate 16. Intermediate two part dies 13 are separated by removable spacers 14. The end of the tube is sealed by a mandrel having a body 32 screwed at 30 into an extension member 23 secured by screws 25 to an adaptor 22 screwed into a piston rod 11. The body 32 has a reduced end with a tapered flange 42, and a tapered nose 36 with a corresponding flange 41 screwed onto the reduced end. The space between the flanges forms a chamber 40 with a circumferential opening 43 through which a neoprene, rubber or like sleeve 44 can project to make sealing contact with the tube. Pressure fluid is supplied at 17 to an axial passage 33 leading to the interior of the tube and ports 37 admit the fluid to the chamber 40. In a modification the chamber 40 has an independent pressure supply similar to that at 17 and the ports 37 are omitted. The piston rod 11 serves to compress the dies axially of the tube, after. the spacers have been removed to complete the corrugation in known manner.
