Abstract

A composition for cleansing and sterilizing milk bottles and like returnable containers for potable or edible products, comprises an alkaline detergent other than a silicate detergent, e.g. sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, sodium hydroxide or mixtures thereof, and a water-soluble or water-miscible tetra alkyl quaternary ammonium halide or hydroxide of general formula <FORM:0650304/III/1> wherein X = halogen or hydroxide; R1 and R2 = alkyl groups each containing not less than six and not more than nine carbon atoms, either of the said alkyl groups being, if desired, replaced by an alkoxyalkyl or acylaminoalkyl group or are alkyl chain groups containing at least one polar group and in each case having six to nine straight chain carbon atoms in the chain; and R3 and R4 are alkyl or aralkyl groups containing up to nine carbon atoms. Further, a hydrogen attached to a carbon atom in one or more of the alkyl chains may be replaced by a halogen, cycloalkylamino or aryl group. Specified quaternary ammonium compounds are di-(N-octyl) N-methyl-N-benzyl ammonium chloride, di-(N-octyl) ethyl a -phenyl propyl ammonium bromide, di-(o -hydroxyoctyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide, di(valeramidoethyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide, di-(hexyloxyethyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide and bis-(1 : 3 : 5-trimethyl hexyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide.ALSO:A composition for cleansing and sterilizing milk bottles and like returnable containers for potable or edible products comprises an alkaline detergent other than a silicate detergent, e.g. sodium carbonate, tri-sodium phosphate, sodium hydroxide or mixture thereof and a water-soluble or water-miscible tetra alkyl quaternary ammonium halide or hydroxide of general formula <FORM:0650304/VI/1> Wherein X - halogen or hydroxide. R1 and R2 = alkyl groups each containing not less than six and not more than nine carbon atoms, either of the said alkyl groups being, if desired, replaced by an alkonyalkyl or acylaminoalkyl group or are alkyl chain groups containing at least one polar group and in each case having six to nine straight chain carbon atoms in the chain; and R3 and R4 are alkyl or aralkyl groups containing up to nine carbon atoms. Further, a hydrogen attached to a carbon atom in one or more of the alkyl chains may be replaced by a halogen, cycloalkylamino or aryl group. Specified quaternary ammonium compounds are di- (N-octyl) N-methyl-N-benzyl ammonium chloride di-(N-octyl) ethyl a phenyl propyl ammonium bromide, di-(w-hydoxyoctyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide, di-(valeramidoethyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide, di-(hexyloxyethyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide and bis-(1 : 3 : 5 trimethylhexyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide.
