Abstract

650,243. Mercury cathode cells. EDWARDS, G. E., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 1, 1948, No. 28278. [Class 41] Brine electrolyte is circulated between the electrodes of an electrolytic cell of the flowing mercury cathode type by means of the gas evolved during electrolysis. As shown, the cell is provided with carbon blocks 1 functioning as the anode. Tubes 3, 4 extend upwardly from the cell over to a chamber 5 provided with an outlet 7 for chlorine and with an inlet 8 and outlet 9 for brine. Tubes 4 are larger and longer than the tubes 3. The chlorine induces circulation of the brine up through the tubes 4 and down through the tubes 3. The tubes 3, 4 may have other relative arrangements than that shown.
