Abstract
649,614. Making tubes ; jointing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SOWTER, A. B. June 28, 1948, No. 17340. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A cold-welded seam for aluminium, aluminium alloy, copper, &c. particularly a lap seam for a tube, is formed by a plurality of cold welds along the seam line arranged so that the sealed areas around any adjacent welds meet or overlap. The welds may be in a single or parallel line which may be staggered, or in an angled line, e.g. in echelon, or chevron-shaped welds may be formed. A tool 1 has a projecting cold-welding tip 3 and a surface 4 to remove or substantially reduce any welding distortion and to control the percentage reduction of the weld. One or more reciprocating tools may co-operate with one or more mandrels, or a toothed roller may co-operate with a plain or toothed mandrel roller. Preferably the mandrels are shaped in conformity with the work surface. In making tube, strip is formed into tube by rollers &c. and its edges are cleaned by scratch brushing and welds effected. Specification 644,795 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
