Abstract

Transformer and dynamo steels are produced in the basic converter process by desulphurizing, blowing without lime or cooling agents until decarburization begins, removing the manganese silicate slag formed, adding lime and cooling agents and blowing, comparatively cold, until a low phosphorus content is obtained, transferring to another vessel after deslagging and then alloying and deoxidizing, under a carbide slag, by the addition of ferrosilicon, calcium silicon and aluminium, and finally, after standing, casting. The sulphur may be removed by alkali, preferably soda, before blowing. The dephosphorized steel may be transferred to one ladle and then to another before alloying and deoxidizing in order to ensure complete removal of the limey slag. Steel having analysis, less than 0.1 per cent C, 0.4-4.4 per cent. Si, 0.1-0.35 per cent Mn, 0.04 per cent (max.) P, 0.04 per cent (max.) S, may be produced.
