Abstract

648,532. Taper roller bearings. FRENKEL, M. S. March 4, 1946, No. 6639. [Class 12 (i)] To avoid skewing of the rollers in a taperroller bearing the rollers have contact with a bearing-ring flange only at their outer end and are of such form or construction that a plane normal to the roller axis and drawn through the centre of gravity of the roller lies nearer to the rotation axis of the complete bearing than a plane normal to the roller axis and drawn through the centre of gravity of the linearly extending contact region of the roller with the rotating race. Thus, as shown in Fig: 1, the taper roller 11 has at its inner end a projecting part 25 which has no contact with the races. The plane normal to the roller axis and drawn through the centre of gravity C of the roller is spaced inwardly. by an amount Lmc from the plane normal to the roller axis and drawn through the centre of gravity of the linearly extending contact region of the roller with the rotating race 12, this latter plane being situated midway of the effective length of the contact as denoted by the dimension H/2. Spacing of the planes through the respective centres of gravity as above specified may be effected by providing an appropriately situated groove 32 in the roller as shown in Fig. 4, or in the race, or the rollers may merely extend radially inwardly of the race. Alternatively the roller may comprise portions of different density such as oil-filled cavities to effect the required spacing of the two planes specified above, or the rollers may have cavities extending inwardly from the outer end. Where such a cavity is extended to provide a through passage this may be shaped as a convergent divergent nozzle and so provide a centrifugal pump action to circulate air thereby cooling the bearing. The rollers may be flanged at their outer end to engage a groove in the race, Fig. 7 (not shown). To ensure all the rollers taking their share in the load the cage may be 'fitted with spring-pressed rotating members engaging the outer ends of the rollers at the axis end point. An equation is given expressing Lmc in terms of the cone angles of the bearing and rollers, load and centrifugal force, and dimensions of the roller.
